LADIES' HOCKEY

PLAY IN THE RAIN AND MUD

CANTERBURY BEAT HANAWATU

One of the chief matches in the ladies' hockey tournament—that between Canterbury and Manawatu —was decided at Karori Park yesterday. Neither the day ■ nor the ground was fit for playing. .

Th.ero is little to be said of the game. It was closely contested and Manawatu were somewhat unlucky to lose. A draw would have been nearer the mark. The game was ab times fast, and, considering tho bad state of the ground, both teams acquitted themselves remarkably veil. Manawatu made a big bid for victory or evens late in tho second spell, but the defence stood solid. The star of the match was the Canterbury winger (Miss Rossiter), who, beeides showing pace and cleverness in attack, frequently upset the Minawatu attack by beating the Palmeraton wing for the ball in tho vicinity of the circle. But for the good work of this winger Canterbury m'ght have been subjected to a large number of extra shots at their net. . -

In tho opening spell each side scored a goal. Canterbury were first to break the ice, Miss Poarce scoring. Canterbury 1 Manawatu 0 Menawatu stuck to their task, and before half-time they had drawn level, a shot from Miss Hodder finding the net. Canterbury 1 Manawatu 1 The second spell was keenly contested throughout. In a general way play was in favour of Manawatu, but to keep out the attackers Canterbury had to call up a very fine defence. Well on in the spell Canterbury attacked Btrongly on several occasions, and on one of these the Manawatu goalkeeper sat on the ball to prevent it going into the net. When the referee cleared away the mix-up he awarded Canterbury a goal. Miss Barr was the scorer. Canterbury 2 Manawatu 1 With the points against' them, Manawatu set up an attack on the city line, which they sustained to the end. Repeatedly. they got into the Canterbury circle, but as often they were provented from shooting or their shots went wide. Manawatu were still in the vicinity of the Canterbury goal when the whistle went, and the scores remained:

Canterbury 2 Manawatn , 1 Messrs. J. Cusack and A. W. Manning were the referees. POVERTY BAY AND WELLINGTON B. Poverty Bay defeated Wellington B by 4 goals to nil. The scorers were Miss Hill (3) and Miss Malcolmn. FIXTURES FOR TO-DAY. Tho fixtures for to-day are set down for the Athletic Park, and are as follow: Poverty Bay y. Manawatu; referees, Messrs. Pragnell and Edwards; and Wellington A v. Canterbury, referees, Messrs. M'Laughlin and Hodgson. The first game will commence at 12.40 and the second' at 1.50.
