An incident which occurrcd in Melbourne only recently bad the effect of causing an important change to be inado in tho phraseology which has been employed in the articles of British ships for perhaps, considerably over 100 years. One stipulation in the articles ga.vo tho captain ipower to fine any member of tho crew for bringing spirituous liquor on board. A captain of a steamer arriving tliore recently exercised this right, and-fined a seaman v.'ho liad brought several bottles of beer aboard tho vessel. The seaman appealed to tho Mercantile Marine Office, and declaring that beer was not spirituous liquor, the superintendent (Mr. Orossley) romittcd the fine. Tho flaw in tho reading of the section was pointed out by him to the British Board of Trade, and copies of articles now contain aji altered stipulation, the word "spirituous" having been changed ti "intoxicating."
