UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY

A .debate was held on Wednesday evening by tho Victoria University College Debating Sociot.y. Tho subject for discussion was "That in tho Interests of' National Progress tho Educational System of New Zealand should be Free, Secular, and Compulsory." It was moved by Air. I. L. G. Sutherland, seconded by .Mr. J. H. Sheat, and opposed by Brother Egbert, seconded by Mr. T. Clearv. The subject was vigorously debated on both sides, and a number of-speakers from tho audience expressed their views. At the conclusion of the debate. Colonel Purdv, who was the judge, congratulated the society on the many excellent speakers it possessed. He spoke on the various merits ■ and demerits of each speech, and his remarks were deeply appreciated by an attentive audience. For the "Union Prize he placed the speakers as follow: Mr. W. E: Leicester, 1; Air. I. L. G. Sutherland, 2; Brother Egbert, 3; Mr. T. Oleary and Mr. J. H. Sheat, 4. ■ .

Much interest is centred in the raffle of the chest- of household linen, which is being held in connection with the Thorndon' Day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop.on September 13. Many of the articles included in this outfit, which will he shown in the Union Clothing Company's windows till Tuesday, are of a value that is to-day unprocurable or rapidly becoming so. > They comprise' sheets, pillowcases, pillows, blankets, bedspreads (one of Teneriffe worked linen being especially valuable), crochet-bordered afternoon leaclothß, d'oyleys, a handsome eiderdown quilt, and other articles which to the housewife mean so much in these days. Among the towels are some silk ones made by the widows of Indian "suMiers who havo fallen in the war. 'tickets may bo obtained from Mrs. Joseph, 51 Grant- Road, or from Mrs. E. (Jillon, 179 Tinakori Eoad, on receipt of a stamped addressed envelope, with money (6d.) enclosed. All raffle hooks are' to be in by September 11. After Tuesday the outfit will be displayed in the Red Cross Shop window. ■ ' ' A few ladies met at the Naw League' sewing room, at the invitation of Miss Laurenson, to inspect Ni number- of beautiful garments collected and mads by Mrs. Harming, of Petone, 'and ; some helpers. Those garments are being dispatched to London through the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Navy League, at their request. At the animal meeting of tho Feathe'rston Fire Brigade, held on Monday night, the retiring honorary officers were rc-elbcted, with active officers as follow:—Captain, C. R. Skipage; lieutenant, T. Tidswell; foreman, N. Taylor; first branohman H. Buck, second J. Vilcs; first hydrantman E. 'Walker, .seceond T. R-uane; secretary, A. Tricker; trustees, C. R. Skipage, T. Tidswell, and A. Trioker.
