LADIES' HOCKEY

A SPLENDID EXHIBITIONi

POVERTY BAY BEAT CANTERBURY

A fine exhibition of ladies' hockey was witnessed at Karori .Park yesterday, when Poverty Day met and defeated Canterbury.

The result was not altogether expected, but on the day Poverty Bay were the better team. The game was among the best seen here for a considerable time. The stick play was excellent and in attack and defence both sides were good. The score (3 to 1 in favour of Poverty Bay) shouljl not be taken as an indication that* Canterbury were considerably below the winners. In fact, the game was rather even. Tho losers lacked that great thing for winning matches —"finish" in attack. Canterbury, also, seemed a little overkeen, and this led to a want of decision apd to a lack of full trust in one another. Poverty Bay played confidently and their hitting was hard and clean. They were a much better team than when they met Wellington on the previous day. In the first spell there was only" one goal, and that went to Poverty Bay, Miss Penrce scoring. Play was fast and the Canterbury forwards had several chances to score, but did not put tho finishing touches on their work.

The second snoll had been some time in progress before Poverty Bay definitely took the upper hand. Then they set lip attack tifter attack, which the Canterbury full-backs did splendid work in meeting. Some of the sliots in the circle were brilliant, but the southern poal-keeper siived time and again. However. clnrine this period of Porcrtv Bav's absolute ascendancy Miss<>s Hill pnd Pparce found the net, so Povertv Bav led by 3to 0. Canterbury rallied ,md launched several fine, attacks on Poverty Bav. but onlv one goal was scored —bv Miss Ross iter. Poverty Bay- ....... 3 Canterbury 1 WELLINGTON A. AND WELLINGTON B. North Canterbury defeated South Canterbury at hockey to-day by 4 goals to one. Play was more even than the score indicates. The ground was very greasy, jvith several shallow pools of water that affected play a good deal.
