BRITISH ULTIMATUM TO BOLSHEVIKI
A STERN WARNING
(Rec. September 6, 1.40 a.m.) London, September 4. The naval attache, C&ptain Cromie, was murdered during the Bolshevik attack on the British Embassy. Tho British Government has scut im ultimatum to the Bolshevik Government demanding immediate reparation, and tlie punishment of ail concerned, and notifies tho' members of the Soviet Government that they will be held individually responsible for any further outrages against tho British.—"The Times."
(Rec. September 6, 1.50 a.m.) London, September 6. The Foreign Office announces that during the Bolshevik attack on the .Embassy at Potrograd oil' Saturday Gaptain Cromie, the British attache, opposed the entrance of the Bolsheviks, and killed three with his own lijind. Then lie was himself killed, and his corpse mutilated. An Euglish clergyman was forbidden to say prayers ovet tho body. The Embassy papers were destroyed. A similar attack was expected at the French Embassy, where defences wero prepared. The Government's note adds: "You have already been informed through 11.. Litvinoff that the British Government is prepared to do everything to secure the immediate return of the British, Russian, and French representatives to their respective countries. We now learn that the decree of August 29 ordered the arrest of all British and French subjects between eighteen and forty years of age, and British officials are being arrested on trumped-up charges of conspiring against tlie Soviet- Government."—Aus.Nf.Z.
