ANZAC COMMANDER PROMOTED

LIEUT.-GENERAL SIR ALEXANDER GODLEY v London, September 4. Major-General Godley lias been promoted to Lieutenant-General for distinguished sorvico.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander Godley, K. 0.8., K.0.M.G., joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1886, and after spending a period at Aldershot Staff College, took part in the South African War, commanding tlio western defences at the siege of Mafeking. Ho later commandod the llhodesian Brigade, with the rank of lieutenantcolonel. Ho transferred to the Irish Guards in 1900, and a year later took up a position on the staff at Aldershot. In 1008 bo becamo attached to tlio General Staff of tlio Second Division, and four years later, with the rank of colonel and tho temporary rank of majorgeneral, lie was' sent out to New Zealand as General Officer Commanding tho Defenco Forces of the Dominion. Shortly after the outbreak of war he left Now Zealand with tho Main Expeditionary Force, saw service in Egypt and at Gailipoli, whero ho was promoted to major-general. Ho was later appointed to command tho combined Australian nnd New Zealand Army Corps, with tho temporary rank .of licuteuantgweral.
