POOLING THE FOOD SUPPLIES
HOW THE ALLIED SCHEME IS WORKING APPEAL FOR CONTROL OF ALL RESOURCES London, September 3. Presiding at a dinner in London on the occasion of the conclusion of the Allied Maritime Transport Council, Lord Robert Cecil strongly appealed for a common Allied control of all Allied resources, which ho declared would make the economic power of the Allies overwhelming. A great deal had already been done. For example, tlio Wheat Executive had not only removed the danger of starvation and guaranteed a fair distribution anionjr tho Allies, but had immensely economised shipping bv securing that each Ally got supplies of corn from the nearest Allied source. An example wa.s tlinfc Italy got her supplies from India, ■ whilo Britain got hers from America. After referring to the Allied committees dealing in food, munitions, and raw materials, Lord Robert Cecil cinnhn.sised tho magnificent results which had followed the united command on the battlefield. It might not be possible to have an economic generalissimo, but the strength of tho Allies would be prodigiously increased if they .could only bring together in some similar fusion the whole of their economic, resources. Ho concluded bv suggesting that this great economic allianco might be turned to uses in peace, after the war - . , . The French, Italian, and American delegates supported 1 Lord Robert Cecil's appeals.—Renter.
AMERICAN WHEAT SUPPLIES. Washington, September President Wilson has announced that the present price of wheat (200 cents., or Bs. 4d.) will applied to tho 1919 crop unless investigation discloses the necessity for an increase. President Wilson said it was difficult to guarantee the price a year ahead, because if there ,should bo penofi, Europe would take advantage of the huge stocks of grain in Australia, India, and Argentine, and this would mean that tho United States would have to face ,a loss of 500 million dollars through inability to sell her surplus for the high price uuaranteed. - Aus.-N.Z.
