WELLINGTON CENTRAL SEAT
MR, O'REGAN'S NAME MENTIONED. Owing to the death of th'e sitting member, the late Mr. Robert Fletcher, the Wellington Central seat becomes vacant. In the course of a few weeks an election must take place to fill the vacancy.. • It is tho duty of the Registrar, so soon as the death-is registered, to ccmmunicato witli Mr.. Speaker, and Mr. Speaker will thereupon cause to he. published in the Gazette an announcement that the seat is vacant. He will also issue a warrant to the Clerk' of Writs, ordering an election, and tho Cleri: of Writs then lias to fulfil his statutory duty of issuing a writ for the election, which writ must be returnable in a period', of not' more than twenty-eight l days. As Mr. Fletcher was a member of tho Liberal Party, under the terms of tho agreement made between the party leaders at the time the National Government was formed Sir Joseph Ward should have the right of choosing who shall be the National Government can>didate in tho election. It is understood that no choice has yet been made. It is commonly reported that Air. P. J. O'Rogaivwill stand for the seat, but it is not suggested that 1 lie will be the National Government candidate.
