THE TORPEDOED ATASAMENDI GOVERNMENT TAKING STEPS Madrid, September 1. The Spanish steamer Atasmendi has been torpedoed. It is reported that the steamer Alexandrine has been sunk.—Reuter. (R'ec. September 2, 8.50 p.m.) Madrid, September 1. Semi-official.—The- Ministry has prepared a report concerning the torpedoing of the Atasamendi. Tho report is based on telegraphic details which wero ordered in anticipation of the enforcement of tho regulation; of August 10 in regard to the seizure of German shipping. The Government has decid,ed, in view of the strained state of public feeling, strictly to appty the espionage law, to prevent the publication of statements calculated to compromise Spain's neutrality, and also temporarily suspend the guarantees relating to tho freedom of the Press.—Aus.-N.Z.
