PENSION PAYMENTS

OFFICIAL FIGURES.

The Hon. A. M. Myers, Minister of Pensions, who is at present in Auckland, stated, when interviewed by » ■■representative of this paper, that tho pensions in force at March 31 Inst and at' July 31 of this year, together with, the new pensions granted and the cancellations for the intervening period, are as follow: — •

The gross payments made for the yearj ended March 31 last in respect of old--age, widows', military, and.miners pon-i sions amounted to £765,135. This; amount includes payments made in re-; epect of thirteen monthly instalments due to the innovation of paying instal-, ments;' ordinarily due ou the first of the month on'the 23rd of the preceding • month. Tho payments for the four, months of-'Jie current year from April ■ 1 to July 31 tinder each head have been as follow: Old-age pensions Widows', pensions .... 24,4b0 ' Military nensious ... 1/,618 Minerß , pensions yUb . £298,745 The total for the current year, therefore, on tho\ basis of these figures,, will bo'.at least £896,235, but it « safe to assume that the increase that has. been taking place as far as; old-age am widows' pensions are concerned, will continue, and the payments may reasonably by expected to well exceed £900,000. ,
