Invercargil!, August 31. The first round of the schools' football tournament to-day was played under very imfavourablo conditions. Tho ball was wet and greasy, and prevented much back play. The games were contested mainly by forwards. Southland High School boat Otago High School by 6 points (two tries) to 5 points (converted try). Otago backs showed flashes of clover combined play, but the Southland forwards dominated the game. Timaru beat Christclrarch High School by 6 points (unconverted try and penalty goal) to 3 points (unconverted try). Play was very even. The Timam forwards were- considerably stronger than the Christclrarch hacks, and played with clever combination.

GOOD SCHOOL GAME AT NAPIER

By Telegraph—Press Association. ■ Napier, August 31. • The match Auckland Grammar Sclf&ol v. Te Auto was played at M'Loan Park to-day in fine weather and -under perfect conditions. The match was witnessed by about 2000 spectators, and was a fine, spectacular, ■ fast game throughout, characterised by sparkling, open play by the Auckland boys, whose perfect unity of action quite outclassed their opponents. Tho passing rushes were very effective. The game was played under the new Auckland system. Auckland won by 26 to 3.- Tries were scored by Badely (2), Griersou, Taylor, Porter, Kronfeldt, and Hardy, one of which was converted by M'Cullough, who also kicked a penaltygoal. Te Ante scored from a penalty kick. The visitors will play Napier High School Old Boys' team on Monday. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, September 1. In the primary schools' football tournament, commenced at Carterton on Saturday, Wanganui beat Wellington by 13 points to 6, and Maha.watu beat Wairanipa by 3 points to nil.
