BIRTH-RATE FALLING
THE WELLINGTON FIGURES. ' For the eight months of-the current yea,r ended on Saturday the vital statistics show that 233 fewer births were recorded in Wellington city than for the corresponding period of last year, and there was a falling off in the number of marriages of 48 during the sajno period. The figures for the oight months of this and last year are as follow :— 1918. 1917. Births 1494 1727 ~Deaths 626 651 Marriages .... 648 696 It is interesting to note that of the 643 marriages registered during tho two-thirds of the year already gone onethird wore contracted in the office of the Registrar (as against 227 in the first eight months of 1917). Tho trend —in wartime—appears to favour marriage by tho civil authorities rather than by officiating clergymen. The vital statistics for August were:— 1918. 1917. Births .......... 190 211 Deaths... 89 89 v Marriages' 1 .... 05 '* Of the 65 marriages recorded for the month, 22 were performed by the Registrar—an average (when Sundays and Saturday afternoons .are omitted; of nearly ono ceremony per day.
