Mr. W. F. Ward was yesterday elected chairman of. the Board of Governors of the Wellington Girls' and Boys'' Collegos, in succession to the Hon. J. G. W Aitken. Mr. Ward, who is a member of the legal firm of Messrs. Quick, Ward, and Wylie, was formerly a master at the Wellington College. •'■The death is announced of Mr. Robert Holliday; who "was well known in Wellington. For many years Mr. Ilolliday, with his brother, Mr. W. Eplliday, carried on. tho bookselling and stationery business on Lambton Quay, which was subsequently disposed o? to Messrs. Whitcombo and. Tombs.. About two years, ago Mr. Holliday had a serious nervous' breakdown, .from which'he never recovered. His death, which occurred at an early hour yesterday morning, will be regretted by a wide circle of friends.
News lias been' received that Lieutenant R. H. Gray, of the R.A.F., pre■viouslv reported missing on July 15 last, is now reported to be a prisoner of war, and iu good health. Mr. Martin Chapman,, K.C., has been appointed by the Government a member of the Board of College Governors, vice Mr. A. AVarburton, resigned. Tho Rov. F. AV. Chatterton, prmcipai of the To Sau Maori Theological College, -Gisborne, has accepted the position of vicar of Rotorua. He is expected to begin work there in January. •. _. . ' . The death is reported of Mr. Percy Bnrrell, who retired to. England some years ago. Ho had farmed- in the Fcilding district'for sonic.years, and was the elder brother of-Mr. Hugh Burrell, chairman of the Oroua County Council. Tlie deceased had no family, but is survived by his widow, who is residing in England.
Mr. A. I. Johns, manager for New Zealand for the Union Irwiranco Society of Canton, Ltd., and the British Tinders' Insurance CompnnjyLtd., lias just been appointed acting-inspector lo the New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd. Mr. Johns leaves shortly for Auckland, where he will temporarily fill the position of secretary to the company. ' Mr. A. S. Clarke, of the local branch of tho (Union of Canton, will assume charge of that company's affairs in an acting capacity.
Major Bernard Tennent, R.A.M.C., who was killed in France on August 23, was a hrother of Mrs. Hogg, wife of Lieutenant-Colonel AV. A. Hogg, Assistant Director of Medical Services in Christchurch. Deceased was a can of the Rev. E. C. Tennent, and was horn it'l Australia. He came to New Zealand when lie was a boy, and was educated at the Dunedin High School. He went to the Old Country to study medicine, and took his • medical degree at the Edinburgh University. He joined the Royal Army. Medical Corps soon after the war began, but oamc back to New Zealand to relieve Licu-tc-nant-Colonel Hogg at AA'cllington when the latter went to England. He was. awarded tho Military Cross pud oik- bar, and was recommended 'for tho 8.5.0.
Mr. Thomas Forsyth (as chairman of the' Wellington Education Board) took his seat for the first time yesterday as one of the Board of Governors d the Wellington College- and Girls' College,
Mr. H. T. Pitcher, who is shortly leaving Island Bay, was the recipient of a fountain pen, pocket book, and wallet on Thursday evening last at tho close of tho practice at the Methodist Church choir. For a considerable timo Mr. Pitcher has been organist. The Rev. Dr. Pinfold made the presentation on behalf of the choir and friends. Messrs. Burd (organist), Herron, sen., R. E. Herron, and Stephens also spoke, and everybody present wished Mr. Pitcher happiness and prosperity in his new home.
