NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of members of the New Zealand Society of Accountants was held last evening. The president (Mr. H. U. Tewsley) was in the chair, and there was a very satisfactory attendance of members.

The report of the council (already published) and the balance-sheet were read. The chairman gave a resume of accountancy activities. He stated that it was 25 years since steps were taken to form a society of accountants, and in 1893 the society was formed. In 1898 the New Zealand Auditors' and Accountants' Society was formed. After tliree 'attempts to hive legislation passed fixing the status of accountants, the New Zealand Society of Accountants' Act was passed in 1908, and arrangements were made to hold examinations. In 1911 the society made arrangements with tlie universities to conduct examinations, and in 1912 the. society granted subsidies to the universities for the appointment of lecturers on accountancy and auditing. He also referred to various other matters in which the society had received recognition. He predicted that after the war a great deal of work will fall upon accountants, and there will be a strong demand for their services. He thought the society liad achieved a remarkable success during its existence, in spite of many adverse conditions. He appealed to members to do their ntmoat to assist the council in mairitaining tlie high standard of the socicty.

Mr. Wm. M'Chillooh' (Havke's Bay district), who seconded the motion, also referred to the activities of the society, and' said ho was extremely gratified with what liad been aecbmplishcd, and he thought that during the next ten years a great deal more would be achieved. Deferring to the iinmediato future he thought there would bo a demand for greater efficiency and economical working. ' , ■ Mr. -J. C. The president said that nothing had been done in the matter, the council confining its efforts to the men returning to New Zealand.

Mr. W. H. Hemingway (Auckland) said thai; an old Member of the society (Mr. L. 0. Gibbons) bad been lecturing to 150 wounded soldiers' at lirockenlmrst Hospital. The announcement was received with cheers. ■_

The election of councillors resulted as follows: —Messrs. G. W. Hutchison (A.ucklmd): C. M. Bowden and E. R. M. Dvniock (Wellington); _ James Brown (Otaco^: Reefi'uiH (Wellington North): and E. J. Harvey (M^Tllhirnuib-Xflson-Westland). Mr. .Tames TCrllow »-as elected auditor at a feo of thirty guineas.
