EASED CONSIDERABLY

TRAM TRAFFIC AT RUSH HOURS. In order' to ascertain the full effect of the new offico hours for public servants, upon tho tramway traffic, the management took a census on August- 22 of the number of passengers on the cars at the chief loading points. This has revealed the fact that the change has worked out pretty much as was anticipated by the tramway authorities. The peak loading both in tho morning and in the evening has been considerably evened. The average number of passengers on outward cars between 4.30 and 6 showed a considerable increase compared with the census taken on August 6, before the new hours came into operation. On the other hand, the average between 5 and 5.30 has decreased, while .the average in all cars between 4.30 and 6.30 is practically the same —52 as against 53. Tho count taken on August 6 showed that the number of outward passengers from Courtenav Place on August 5 tietween 4.30 and. 6.30 was 8591; on August 22- the figure was 5643. Under the new arrangement it is possible to get an extra run out of threo cars. Of course, the five o'clock loading is still heavy, but the effect of tho altered hours will be best aporeciated when it is stated that it his been found necessary to run a hie decker to Island flay before 5 o'clock as well as after hoar. The officials st#e positivfflv. that the situation in regard to overcrowding has been eased considerably.
