FUTURE FOR HORSES
! Draught horses weighing IGOOIb. and ; up were realising from £ti to MO in the ;■ United States two months ago. As to the ! future, special efforts are being made to | encourage horse-breeding and the rais- , ;ing of the general' standard. One effort i 'was the issue of conspicuous posters di.s- ---; tributed by the Minnesota Horse Breeders' Association and the Stallion Kegisi tration Board in that State. Five thon- ; sand copies were sent to owners of purebred stallions and others. Tho following is an extract from the poster:— "Increa.se your profits and help supply ■ the world's shortage of horses. It will : pay you to breed every good maro this ; seasoa. In Scotland, England, Belgium, ; and I'rance draught horses are selling ; up to .£IOO to „E2OO apiece. The War ■ Department has announced that since the : beginning of the war the animal strength : of the United States Armv has been in- ; creased from BG,M to 3-14,000. Statistics '■ show that .'ess than 5 per cent, of the horses in the United States will weigh over IGOOIb. More draughters will be dc- : manded for war purposes. America is the ; only.country in the world with enough breeding <stock to supply the after-war j European demand. How may we supply the demand? Raise good, sound draught i liorse3 of good conformation, weighing ! IKOOIb. to 18001b. Itaiso clean, well-set-up : farm horses of from HOOIb. to IGOOIb. i Eaise a limited number of select light horses. Communiiy breeding always i makes for keener interest, better horses, ' more ready sales, and larger profits. Use : only the best purebred stallion in your : country. Choose one that is sound, of good breeding, and a good individual, • preferably a tried and proved sire. When Jii doubt ask for his license certificate. : The mare is important. Every good, ; Round draught mare should bo bred this , eeason. Tho good influence of the high- ; class siro will bo minimised or obliter- , nted when mated to inferior mares.
Horses of good inheritance arc nisido or i marred by the usago they receive until 1 they reach maturity. Good feeding and ' manngsmont must follow careful mating , to produce the outstanding, profit-making ,' horse."
