BUSINESS 01:' THE COUNCIL.

■ 'Jim Victoria College Council met last evening. .Mr. C. Watson presided. The College Students' Kcjculy wroto asking for financial aid in eeriain patriotic works. Jt was propi;-.;'d to hold regular Saturday sewing bees to provide socks, etc., for college and other men at the front.

the secretary said that the financial aid was sought for the purchasing of the raw material needed.

It was resolved to reply to the effect that Ihe council sympathised with the movement, but had not tho power to vote money for this purpose. The. Graduates' Association wrote respecting the proposed memorial hail in honour of students who had fallen in

the war. They suggested tli'l an early move should be made in the waiter anil expressed willingness.to co-opr::ite in any way suggested.

A letter was received from the Graduates' Association on the subject of the selection of Rhodes' scholarship candidates. The association said that as there was no scholar to ho chosen this .year, and as there seemed lo he some uncertainty as to tho method of selection, a' conference should ho hold (o settle _a form of procedure that might ho satisfactory to the various bodies interested.

Tt was resolved to reply that Ihe cooneil considered it had no standing in (he matter, and to advise the association to appeal | n the, Selection Committee.

Tho Finance and Business Ciinmitlee recommended that tho council should arrange to tiiko jrnt sfens with Canterbury Collo.ee for transfer of tho West! laud and Grov districts to tho Canterbury University district. Tho recommendation was adopted.

Tn accordance with a recommendation from tlic Professorial Board, it was decided that Mr. I!. K Murphy should ho given a scat on that, hoard.
