THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS
PRACTICAL BEGINNING POS. RIBLE.
(Eec. August 20, 1.25 a.m.)
London, August 19.
Mr. G. N. Barnes, after a hostile reception at his meeting at Glasgow, said thnfc the first duty of a League of Nations should bo to supervise the control and manufacture of munitions of war, eliminating the element of private profit; also it should- aim at the limitation of armaments, and provide a peaceful roenns of settling international disputes. If other mei\ns failed, a resort to arms might bo necessary to bring a truculent nation to took. Ho believed that something practical could bo done by the Allies in forming a provisional league, leaving Clio door open for others to join later. If the Allies formulated a policy in,regard tn the use of war materials after the war, 011 tho basis of all nations coming in after the war, and tho wrecked areas mailo good, Germany might come to terms and her people be induced to throw/ off tlioir taskmasters.—Aus.-N.Z.
