Tho Otira Tunnel is five and one-third miles in length from face to face, and, though rather larger than the ordinary railway tunnel, is only wide enough to take one line of Tails. _ The nature of the ground pierced varies, but none of it is safe enough to leave unprotected, so the' entire length of the tunnel is being lined with concrete, from twelvo to eighteen inches in thickness accordnij to the character of the ground.
