Shortly after it was announced that the Otira Tunnel had toeeii f pierced, a movement was set on foot to mark tho completion of tho excavating work in, connection with tho tunnel, i'he Canterbury and Grevmout'h Chambers ot Commerce. viewing with elation the prospect of through railway connection troin coast to coast, have beeu iu touch, and with tlio assistance and co-operation of tho Minister of Public Works (Sir William Eraser) arranged for a "last shot . ceromony, which is to take place 1 at>2.3o p.m. to-pion-ow. The Mayor (Mr. J. 1. Luke) left for Chrislclmrch vesterflhy afternoon to be present, nnd there will also be present the Mayors ot Clirißt'church and Greymouth, and possibly other West Coast Mayors, the Engnioer-m-Chief (Mr. R. W. Holmes), and representative business and commercial men from both sides of the Island to com-_ niemorato the event. The Minister ot Public Works (Sir William Eraser) will perform tho "last' shot" ceremony by pressing ail electric button at a safe distance nwav from tho last piece of rock to be blasted.from the centra! section of the tunnel. There will be speeches delivered, and the tunnel works will he inspected by the party. . Tho Otira Tunnel is five and one-third miles in length from face to face, and, though rather larger than the ordinary railway tunnel, is only wide enough to take one line of Tails. _ The nature of the ground pierced varies, but none of it is safe enough to leave unprotected, so the' entire length of the tunnel is being lined with concrete, from twelvo to eighteen inches in thickness accordnij to the character of the ground.
