LOSS OF TIIE INVERNESS. ■' A nautical inquiry into the- loss of the barque Inverness was commenced at the Auckland Magistrate's Court on Thursday, before Mr. K 0. Outten, S.M., Captain JTKcnzie, and Professor Worley. Mr. Solwyn Mays appeared for the Marino Department, and Mr, A. E. Kkclton for the owners and master of the ship. The Inverness was a barque of 1817 tone, owned in Cardill. Thu'matter was Captain John Hughes, and she carried a crew of 26, of whom nino were foreigners. In his evidence, the captain stated that the vessel carried a cargo of nitrates from Chile to Durban, and after discharge and thorough cleaning, loaded 2500 tons of Bteam coal for Chile. She mailed on February 25 last, the course being set south of iNew Zealand. The temperature of the coal was taken daily, but up to March 7, when 95 degrees were recorded, the state of the coal remained normal. On that day, they turned the surface coal and inoreased the ventilation, .which caused the temperature. of the coal to become normal and continue bo until April 19, when 96 degreee were recorded, The next day, the temperature had risen to 180 degrees, and the following day 132 degrees were 'registered. On that day, the weather moilcrated, enabling twenty to thirty tons of the coal to be unloaded over the side. The weather got bad again, however, and work in the hold was discontinued. It was found impossible to Hood the heated portions of the coal, and it was decided to smother it as best they could. On April 24, the temperature was 354 degrees, fltnse clouds uf yellow smoke and vapour came through the main ventilator, ;;nd the pitch in the seams of the deck began to bubble. The Marine Department were notified yesterday that the iliiieinoa was .it I'iiysecur Point. Tho carpeatws who have built the lighthouse-keepers' new houses there, and horses, etc., will bo landed at Blufl to-day, when the Hinpnioa will sail for thp Weet Ooaet and Wellineton.

LOSS OP THE A. M. BAXTER. Tho Suva correspondent of the Auckland "Star", gives further particulars of the wreck of the copra schooner A. M. Baxter, reported earlier in the week. The vessel left Suva with a fair wind on Wednesday at midday; at 10.50 .the sama night she sailed full tilt on to the reef with all her sails set. She had on board 740 tons of copra, and wae bound for San Francisco. It was impossible for the crew to leave the vessel at night, but when daylicht camo they managed to get away in two boats. Captain M. A. Hellquist, .with the cook and two seamen, took obargo of a 6mall boat, and endeavoured to' reach Suva. They got as far as Yanucca, whero they landed, exhausted, after eighteen hours. The natives brought them on to Navua, which place was reached at a late hour of the night of July 17. Up to the time of writing nothinic has been heard of tho remainder of the crew, but the Government stoam yacht has been sent to their relief.
Cargo for Dunedin an.-' Oamaru will be received till 11 a.m. to-day by tho John. Colliers arriving hero during the weekend are:—Kamo and Karaniu, from Greymouth; and Poherua, from Westport. The Kahika put in hero last night for bunker coal. Sho ie on her way to Victon and Onehunga.
Tho Ngatoro was to have left Greymouth last night for Wellington. Mr. W. W. Houghton has signed on the Mapourika as extra engineer.
Mr. W. Blonifield has joined the Monowai as wireless operator, relieving Mr. H. J. Dowler.
Messrs. W. J. M'Bryde and G. .G. Sang, mates on tho Hazel fiopton, came ashoro yesterday. The crew was also paid off. The Kara, Messrs. M , Arthur, Jeffries and Co. advise, is to sail to-day for Nydia Bay. to load timber for Lyttelton. The Tntauekal will Bail at 9 a.m. to-day for the Chatham Islands (Waitangi. Kaiiigaroa, and Owongo). She will return to Wellington direct.
Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that the Kahu will load on Monday for Napier. The Union Comuany's cargo steamer, which was advertised to Sail for Melbourne on Wednesday next, is now to leave Wellington on Tuesday. The Union Company advise that the Bosauiond will load general cargo at Wellington on Thursday for Dunedin, Oamam, and Timaru. .
The auxiliary schooner Gitsborne reached Port Ohnlmera nt 1 a.m. on Wednesday from Wellington, via Kaikoura and Akaroa. nfter a Ion; and very stormy passago of twents'-four days. Tlio schooner left Wellington on July 20. and was severely bufloted bv fierce southerly galea in Cool; Strait,. which reduced several of her sails to rags and compelled her to shelter at Kaikoura for several daye. Arrangements have been made for the distribution of torpedo badges to masters and seamen who have served on vessels which liavo been sunk or damaged by torpedo or mine during the war, and who have afterwards signed on for nud completed a further voyage (states "Syren and Shipping"). In addition to the badge, a bar will be awarded for each subsequent torpedoing or mining, and when five bare have been awarded the recipient can, If ho so desires, exchango his badge and bars for a pentagonal pointed star. The badge takes the design of a torpedo,' and is to be worn on tho cuff'of the left sleeve.
