Tho Mayor (Mr. .T.'P. Luke) has returned from a brief visit to Wanganui.

The passengers who are to leave Auckland for America by the Makura to-day

include Mr. .Tames Marchbanks (engineer of tho Wellington Harbour Board)"; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Kighton, of Wellington; Miss Vera Pearce, the Australian actress, and Mr. E. J. Tait (of tho firm of J. and N. Tait).

Mr. E..C. Levvey, M.A., LL.B., barrister -and solicitor, of Wellington, has been appointed a Magistrate, and he is to be stationed on the West Coast, with headquarters at AVestport. Mr. Levvey came to New Zealand from Australia, and he was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1(104, since when ho has practised in Wellington. Mr. Levvey has been chairman of the Management Committee of the Boturned Soldiers and Sailors' Hostel, formerly stationed at Newtown, but now established in a suitable building on Wellington Terrace.

Mr. W. Goe, late Chief Postmaster at Nelson, who has been promoted to a similar position at Christclmroh, passed through Wellington yesterday. Mr. Gee (who is the son of the late Mr. W. Gee, who was the head of Gee's Grammar School in Old Christchnroh for many years) entered the servico in Christchurch as a cadet on September 17, 1877. and returns to his native town as Chief Postmaster after 41 years' service.

One of Auckland's oldest, settlers, Mr.. Samuel Blomfield, died at Birkenhead on Monday, in his 83rd year. Mr. Blomfield arrived in the Waitemata in ISG2, with tho Albertland settlers, in the ship Gertrude, and was soon settled in the city, following his trade, that of a joiner. When the Thames goldfield was opened in 1807, Mr. Blomfield was a member of one of the earliest parties of pioneer diggers. Tailing to make any discoverv of importanco in prospecting'he reverted to his handicraft, which ho carried on at .Thames until about 1890, when he returned to Auckland. About 10 years ago lo retired from active business, and for some time past lie had made his home at Birkenhead. Tho decoased is survived by Mrs. Blomfield and by ten sons agid daughters. His sons are Mr. William" Blomfield, Mayor of Takapttna. Messrs. Charles, John C, Fred, and Thomas Blomfield. The daughters areMrs. Milton Porter, of Wellington. Mrs. G. Huddlestone, Birkenhead, Mrs. ,T. M'Leod, Mrs. M'Lennan. and Mrs. Carlsen, all, of Auckland. There are also a large number of grandchildren nnd jreatgrandchildren. Farrier-Sergeant-Major W. E. Hutchings, of AVollington, has been killed in action. Ho left with the Main Body, and had been on active service ever since. In a recent letter to his relatives liere he mentioned that of 52 horses wounded .in battle 40 had, after a great deal of timo and trouble, and the exercise of much skill, been saved. Mrs. Hutchjngs died a few months ago, leaving-a little son. Deceased's sisters are Mrs. G. Scott, Constablo Street; Mrs. S. G. Swiney, Blenheim; and Mrs. H. P. Norns, Dunedin. { News ha,s been received in Wellington that Captain George Sandham, M.C. (Main Body N.Z.M.C.), has been admitted to hospital in England suffering from neurasthenia. This is the first occasion on which ho has had to leave his unit, No. 1 Field Ambulance, since the landing at Gallipoli. His one desire had been to remain with it to the finish.

Mr. T. R. Allen, who has been manager of tlie Mastcrton branch of tho Public Trust Office for tho last four years, lias been transferred to Wanganui. " Tho Wairarapa Presbytery has granted extended leave to the Key. G. T. Brown, M.A., who is at present on active service.

Tho death has occurred in the Wainu Hospital of Mr. Frank M'Callum, elder son of Mr. Richard M'Cullum, M.P., and grandson of Mrs. Frank Grady, of Wellington. The causo of death was appendicitis. The late Mr. M'Callum was educated at tho Blenheim Borough School, the Marlborough High School, and Victoria College, Wellington, no was admitted as'' a solicitor of the Supremo Court in .Tune, 1917, on tho application of his fattier; and became a partner in the firm of M'Callum, Mills, and Co. His parents have widespread (sympathy in their bereavement.

Mr. T. .T. Chapman, of the Bristol Piano Company, Ltd., who is about to go into camp, has been presented with a Rotherani wristlet watch by his fellow employees. Mr. Chapman is the last of five 6ons to join the colours. Ojie brother, the lato Serjeant 11. It. Chapman, enlisted in Australia, and went through the landing on GallipoK. He won the D.G'.M. while on the Peninsula, where ho was 6evwely .wounded. After a few months in England, he returned to active service in France in time for the Sommo rjU6h, and continued on active service till-the morning of May 14, when ho.lost his life. Another brother, Ser-jrcant-Maior C. E. G. Chapman, of the 27th N.Z.F.A., is in No. 2 Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, where he is progressing satisfactorily. He hopes to return to France again very/shortly.
