SHIPYARDS V. U-BOATS

THE RACE AGAINST THE PIRATES

STATEMENT BY LORD PIRRIE

London, August 9. Lord Pirrie, Controller of Merclnnt Shipbuilding, stnted in an interview that there are 210 separate shipbuilding, repairing, and marine engineering establishments under his Department. The better fiychrnnising of hulls and machinery h<;d resulted in a marked acceleration of output. There was now very rarely any delay due to waiting for machinery for standard ships, because it was interchangeable. Any immediate material increase in the present rate of output was hardly to lie expected until additional skilled workers were obtained. Fiftyfix small conoreto ships were under construotion. They were built-in wooden moulds, in which 6teel rods to form tho reinforcement were placed, and the conoreto was poured in. The number of vessels salved after being damaged had recently increased, owing to tho improvement in the Admiralty's salvage organisation and the devices used to minimise damage—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
