The theory that they havo been drowned in an attempt to swim to the shore in a heavy sea, is not confirmed by any direct evidence. The search for the men around the harbour nnd further afield has been fruitless. Tho discovery of an empty boat on tho beach in Evans Bay gave rise to a report that the men had made, their landing there. But apart from tho lack of evidence that tho boat had como from Somes Island at all, it seemed improbable that the Germans would have made their way to Evans Bay in the iectli of a southerly gale when better e.nrt nearer landing places wero offering in the other direction.
