At tho monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Carter-ton on Thursday, Mr. Colciuan Phillips, as tho oldest member of the Bar practising in the Wairarapa, took the opportunity of expressing to Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., tho regret of tho profession at his retirement from the Bench. Mr. Phillips said Mr. Reid had been a strict magistrate, but a fair one. He had no doubt kept members of tho Bar in strict control, and had won tho respect and esteem of all, and the speaker, on behalf 'of tho profession, heartily wished Mr. Reid 'a long and happy life in his honournblo retirement. Mr. A. Hogg cordially endorsed these remarks. In his reply, Mr. Reid expressed hie pleasure in hearing Mr. Ph'illips'e remarks on his retirement, and lio thanked the members of the Bar for the kindly sentiments which had been conveyed to him. Ho had endeavoured to do "hie duly without fear and without favour, fairly and .honestly, and ho thought that if a man did that ho could.do no more. His relations with (he profession in the Wairarapa. had always been most cordial, and ho greatly appreciated the good wishes for his future, expressed by Mr. Phillips. Mr. W. A. Piko has donated a handsomo challenge cup to the Wairarana nnd East Coast l>. and A. Society for tlio winner of t.he list, liaclc class." The cup is to bo won three times before being won outright.
