A "LAME DUCK"
AUXILIARY SCHOONER'S ROUGH ■ > EXPERIENCE. ■ Br ToleEraph.-Pres3 Association. Christchurch, August 8. A telegram from Kaikoum states that the auxiliary schooner May Howard, three weeks out from Wellington, 'bound for Duncdin, put in for shelter, a "lnmo duck," in the recent heavy weather. She lost her rudder, which necessitated the rigging of a jury rudder. This also carvied away. The vessel is leaking rather badly, and may return to Wellington to obtain a new rudder and effect repairs. Captain Mirtnby states that theehip had a bad knocking about, and is in an unfit condition, apart from the loss of her rudder, to proceed south. The auxiliary schooner Gisborno- is sheltering under Amuri Bluff. The weather is bad and the sea heavy.
The Gisborne, which also left Wellington on Saturday, July 20, in ennsequenco of the continuous heavy southerly gales, has had to put back to various places for shelter on eight occasions. The schooner passed Cnpe Campbell on Wednesday morning, July 31, and again met bud weather, and the master put into Kaikoura for shelter and to repair several sails which had been damaged. She left Kaikoura at 10 a.m. on Tuesday last for Dunedin. in continuation of her voyage from Wellington., Captain Kanniiijr stated that the weather during the past three weeks had been the most violent ho had ever experienced on tho New Zealand coast.
