COAL MINES DISPUTE
GOVERNMENT URGED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE MINES.
By Telegraph—Press AeEociation Chrlstchurch, August 6. Mr. Hiram Hunter, secretary of the Now Zealand Federation of Labour, in. Iho coui«e of a letter to Sir Jamee Allen in connection with the coal mines dispute, says:—"l desire, on behalf of organised Labour in New Zealand, to make an urgent appeal to the Government to immediately take over control of the'coal mines in Now Zealand. Wβ mato this appeal because wo are of opinion that the coal mine owners should not bo allowed to precipitate an industrial conflict which will cause an immense amount of suffering to innocent people, and serious losses financially toall olasses."
At a meeting of the Dominion Executive Council of the New Zealand Locomotive Engineers', Firemen, and Cleaners' Association, held on Sunday, the following resolution was approved:—"That the mine owners be condemned for Tefusiuz to meet the miners in conference, and this council calls upon the Government to call a compulsory conference of the mine owners and miners' representatives."
