POST AND TELEGRAPH REVENUE
FIGURES FOR THE JUNE QUARTER, The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Act-ing-Postmaster-General, has furnished the following particulars of the revenue of the Post and Telegraph Department for the quarter ended June 30 last:— The postal revenue was ,£248,511, 9s. 3Jd., showing an inorcaso over the corresponding quarter in 1917 of over ■£10,000, tho greatest portion of which was in postages. The telegraph-revenue for tho quarter was .£840,948 14s. This shows a substantial increase; the increase on account of telegrams being 15s. 91d., and on . account of telephone exchanges, ,£10,937 7s. 2d. Money-orders issued and paid for the quarter numbered 303,335 of the value of £1,686,943 7s. Id., ns against 283,008 and £1,526,139 7s. for tho same period in 1917. The savings bank deposits amounted to .£4,597,605 9s. ;2d., and the withdrawals to .£4,407,088 17s. 6d., giving an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £190,570 lis. Bd. For the Juno quarter last year tho excess of deposits wn* 411,448,013 7s. 5d.. The smaller excess this year is entirely duo to tho raising of the Tecent War Loan. The postal notes sold totalled 533,489 of the value of .£157,095 14s. 2d., as against 527,412, of the value of '.£156,310 lis. sd. for tho corresponding quarter in 1917. As a whole, tho business of the Department shows a satisfactory reflecting the general prosperity of tho Dominion in spile of war conditions.
