WINTER SUPPLIES OF MILK

NEW PRICES TO BE FIXED. Arrangements have 'been made regarding tho prices to bo paid in futuro for the milk to bo supplied by farmers to Wellington City. 'J'he fallowing statement was made last night by Councillor C. B. Norwood, chairman of tho Special Committee of the City Council which has been dealing with the city milk supply question:— "Mv committee lias bosn in'touoh with the Board of Trade regarding the fixing of the maximum prices which, the farmer will bo allowed to charge for his milk for the coming year. It is admitted that tho prices which tho farmer has been allowed for summer supply liavo been too high, but that the same prices allowed for winter supply have been too low. This fact, coupled with the great summer demand for 'butter-fat for manufacturing purposes and the drudgery of winter milking, not umiatw.illy caused many farmers to arrange the calving periods for their herds so as to produce, summer supuly only. I am pleased to to 'announce that this will be remedied immediately, and although prices cannot be known until the oversea contracts for tha country's milk products Wive I>een definitely fixed, my committee has com© to an understanding with I;e Board ot Trade that the prices for the coining year will be on a sliding scale, with three different rises, allowing tho farmer at least sd. per gallon more milk in ho dead of winter than ho will get in the flush of the summer season. . "This, my committee hopes, will induce the farmer to produce winter milK. and obviate a .recurrence of tlmpresent unprecedented shortage ot milk..
