FORTUNATUS STREET
Sir,—There is a thoroughfare in Yogeltown, which by a singular paradox rejoices in the name of Fortunatus Street. The access to the city end of this Elysium is by means of a steep and slippery bank from Connaught .Terrace, Until recently tho residents were allowed a right-of-way. through private property. This has now been closed., Owing to the distance from town tradespeople won't visit the locality, consequently the necessaries of life have to be carried by hand. The residents (and incidentally ratepayers) of this street are solely comprised of women whose husbands arc absent upon military service, which fact no doubt accounts for their requests to the City Council to erect steps in tho bank being unheeded. Tho expenditure of a few pounds would provide a short flight of steps, which anyone who knows the locality regards as an absolute necessity. Letters have also been addressed to the Mayor upon the subject. These he has kindly "noted." We dori't quite know what to make of Mr. Luke lately. If he would only devote a few moments from his duties as impresario to the French Fund's concerts, divert his attention from winning the war, and come to earth sufficiently to give a little attention to his duties as Mayor we would be so glad. We might, also remind Mr. Luke that before any ambitious.schemes for the promulgation of Greater Wellington are entered into, it would be as well to clean our own stable first. The state of tilings I have drawn attention to would certainly not be tolemted in any suburban borough.—l am. etc RESIDENT.
