Captain Larsen, of the Wootton. reported last night that when his vessel was entering the Heads about 4.30 p.m. yesterday the dead whale seen by the Corinna on Wednesday afternoon was in Chaffer's Passage.
The view that there is a shortage of scauiou aud llreuien at the port o£ Auckland is shared by the Superintendent of Murine, who declares most emphatically from liis everyday experienco of keeping, up to thoir full complement the Bhips that sail from there thai there in an unquestionable shortage. He states that- it is not an infrequent occurrence for ships to ho hung up for some hours after suiting lime because of the difficulty of getting a full crow. The matter is one, he says, that cannot bo judged from lists of men on the books as available, for, despite the fact that such men are on the books, experience shows that they are not available when wanted, and the supply ii only a hand-to-mouth' one, which require* the most rigid administerial economy to keep the' ships going on time. There is only one adequate reason for the shortage, ho adds, and that is tho very large number of good men who have enlisted. Six times torpedoed in threo years has been tho experience of a ship's tiremau named Hunter, lie was in the Lusitania when tho Huub sank her. He makes light of his adventures. "I know a man named Henry belonging to North Shields," he said, "who has been torpedoed 19 time 6 and he is not scared of the Huns yet. Nor am I. Shall I go to sea-again? Of cuurse 1 shall. w"bal olec is there to do:-" First Engineer Brown, of Glasgow, who whs also torpedoed said: "This makes the third' time I've been torpedoed in a comparatively short while. The Becond time it happened in the Atlantic, nearly 300 miles from-land, and we were adrift in boats for three days. (But 1 haven't got cold feet yet." 1 The Union Company advertise the departure of the ilonowai for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland at 5 p.m. to-day, cargo for Auckland not being received. The weather is still had on West Coast, some bar porta being closed to shipping. The Kamo was inßide at Greymouth yesterday afternoon, and the Kahika outside. At Westport the conditions were better, and at 5 a.m. the Kamona passed outward for Wellington. At noon to-morrow th? Jlimitangi will sail for 'Waitangi, Kaingaroa, and Owenga, taking general cargo. The vcsßel will call at Lyttelton en route. Owing to delay at Wangamii the Calm will not he here until ..tomorrow to load for southern ports. ' The auxiliary schooner May Howard arrived in the stream early yesterday morning after a good passage' of four days from Invercaigill. Today she will loan general cargo for Duiiediu and luvercargill. Mr. K. N. Gow has joined the Corinnn as third engineer, relieving Mr. F. Ferneaux.
