LEVIN NOTES

(Prom a Special Correspondent.) The Land for Settlements Deportment recently supplied to Mr. W. H. Pield, M.P., a return of land purchased for settlement- in the Otaki electorate. Since 1013, an urea of 923 acres, of a value of j;33,38-t, has been acquired, by the Government for closer settlement. In thanking tho Minister of Lands for this information, Miv Field asked why the Otaki end of the district finds more favour than the Levin. In the course of his reply.to Mr., Field,, the Hon. D. n. Guthrie made the following statement:— "The question of purchasing lands close to Levin is not being lost sight of, but so far nothing has been'offered that the board could see its way -to recommend."

At the annual meeting of the Horowhemia A. and P. Association, Mr. G. 'fully was elected president for the year, and the names of Mr. Charles Blenkhorn and Mr. F. S. Easton were added to the list- of vicp-nresidents. It was suggested that the date of the s'how be altered to the spring. This was not agreed to. but a committee was elected to try and arrange a date in Januarv that would not clash with Woodville Show dates. Plans are'about tn be prepared for the building of a new theatre in Levin on a site at the corner of .Oxford Street and Queen Street. Tt will be constructed in reinforced concrete;

- The Itorowhenua Comity Council recently directed that a tally be taken of the traffic at the Waikawa Bridge for a period of U days. There were 3-17 through .cars noted, and 43S local cars: motor-cycles 'totalled 23!); motor-lorries, 10; hwsp-drnwn vehicles. 32G; ordinary cycles, J62. 'f litis a. toll-gate, jf established, would yield about .£3200 a year. Final action has been deferred until next mpeting of the council.

It is understood that at the next .meeting of the Fir" Bri"ade Committee the question of a Fire Board will be dealt .with.
