MEATLESS DAYS ABOLISHED IN FRANCE

Some idea of the cost of living for the civilian population in Franco is ffivon by elaborate tables published by tho "Petit Journal" concerning tho price of various foods in 19 of the largest provincial towns. An analysis ot tucso shows:—Beef for pot a.ii feu, the national dish of boiled beef and vegetables, highest price, Bordeaux, 3s. per lb.; lowest, Havre, Js. 3d. Mutton cutlets, highest, Havre, 3s. sd. per lb.; lowest, Grenpblo, 2s. Pork cutlets, highest, Havre, 35. M.; lowest, Nantes, 2s. 2d. Ezgs, highest, Bourges, Gd. each; lowest, Le Mans, 2Jd. Butter, highest, Bourges, 4s. Bd.; lowest, Eennes, Is. Bd. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday have been tho three meatless day of each week in Franco since May 15. Tho sale of ovory kind of fresh or preserved meat, poultry, or game on these days was forbidden, but tho salo of horser meat in shops exclusively supplying that article was permitted. Neither horse nor any> other meat, however, could bo sold in restaurants. To prevent people from buying in advance tiio number of cattle . to be slaughtered is limited, and all ■ abattoirs aro closed from Monday night i till G a.m. on Friday. Boarding ! schools, factory canteens, and_ hospitals i iire exempted from tho restrictions. Fur- ■ thor measures are threatened if the now 1 rulo3 aro unsuccessful.
