"HANDS OFF THE PACIFIC"
UNCOMPROMISING SPEECH BY MR. HUGHES. London, July 14. Mr. W. M. Hughes,, speaking at tho Pilgrims' Club, reiterated that Australia's policy with regard to Germany's possessions in the Pacific was inexorably "Hands off the Pacific." Theso islands stretched like a barrier across the routes leading to other lands. Who commanded theso routes commanded Australia; and Australia could not agrco to a peaco which would permit New Guinea, to be returned to Germany. Tho Pacific was going to bo the sceno of many international complications and racial'problems, and until Germany was democratised sho must not be permitted to cast tho shadow of despotic rulo over lands whoso development depends upon freedom. Australia's policy carried ycat and gravo responsibilities, but she was prepared to fight on till victory was won. Mr. Hughes said ho was surp that America would put her veto against German influence in tho 'Pacific—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
