It will be romemhorjd that early in the campaign this summer there were oasnnlty lists referring" to the loss 'of numbers of Now Zealanders from the "Entrenching Battalion." As ho had no.; knowledge of any such unit, tlio Minister telegraphed inquiries, and he has now recoived the following reply.— "All New Zealanders in France were last February, on tho absorption of the Fourth Brigade, organised into three entrenching battalions, and are now so organised, but, when tho surplus numbers are absorbed they form an entrenching group, strength one battalion. On April 12 No. 2 Entrenching Battalion, strength 22 officers and 1130 other ranks, moved hurriedly by motor bus from Abeele to ■ St. Jaas Capel to fill a gap near Meteren, and attached to the 10th Division. They rendered excellent service, and fought well, bnt some captured through being cut off. Casualties, 251."
