THE GERMAN-OWNED NEW YORK "MAIL"
STATEMENT BY THE ACCUSED. New York, July 11. E. A. Rumely, whose paper is alleged to be owned by the German Government, but who swore it was owned by Americans, in a statement, said that tho New York "Mail'* materially supported tho United States Government's war policies. Ho denied the perjury charges.

[Edward Aloysisus Rumely, besides his connection with journalism (on the business side only), is described as a manufacturer, and has been active, especially in agricultural engineering. Ho is credited with having done much to develop the mechanical tractor as a. substitute for horses in farm work; and ho has also developed now ideas in education. Ho was born in the United States in 1882, but was educated partly in Germany, at the Universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg. His mother's name was Zimmerman.]
