ATTEMPTED BURGLARY
AFTER THE FRENCH APPEAL MONEY. When members of the Btaff of Messrs. J.H. Bothune and Co. arrived at ilia office of that firm on Saturday morning it wfiß discovered that «<fto time during the night an attempt had been made to break into the office. The main office door opens off a small vestibule on tho Featherston Street sido of tho premises, and tho marauder had evidently tried to prise off the lock with a chisel, and in doing so had hacked at tho woodwork round tho lock, chips of tho wood being found on the floor immediately under tho lock. Evidently tho task proved to be no easy one, or perhaps it was ono which occupied too long a time consistent with safety, for Iho burglar failed to effect hie purpose. It is assumed that tho burglar had designs on the cash which had been collected during tho day for "New Zealand's tribute to France," which, was paid into tho accounting staff and counted there, work which was not completed until lata in the evening. If that were the intention tho guilty party was out in his calculations, a» tho monuy was paid into the bank the same night.' Tho attempt must have been made after 1 o'clock at night, as there wero people about the offico up till that hour.
