Sir Ceorge Clifford returned to Christchurch by the Mararoa on Saturday. Dr. D.' Sutherland, of Invercargill, brother to Mr. B. Sutherland, of the Railway Department, who was visiting tho North Island for health reasons, died last evening at his brothers residence at Brooklyn. The remains will be taken south to-night for interment at Invercargill. The following particulars of the death of the late Captain James K. B. Lew, of Wellington, who died from wounds received in action in Prance, were received by the last English mail.. Y\ nting under date -May 22, Captain W. .T. Rodger, Ist Canterbury Company, *nd New Zealand Entrenching Battalion, states—"Poor .lim was badly wounded on or about April 16 during a very hot efi-agement at Meteren. He was in command of the Ist Otfcgo Company, and my company was on his left, lie went oiit with a party to capture a machineKun which was giving a lot of trouble. He succeeded in dispatching most 01 ttio gun's 'crew, when another gun was turned on him, which severely wounded him in the stomach and wrist. He endeavoured to regain our line, but fell befoff reachin» it. His men got. him in, and carried him down to the dressing-station, but, unfortunately, he died shortly afterwards. . . • His very gallant action was brought under the notice of his superiors, and we are hoping that some decoration will be sent out to his parents."

Word has been received that 6 3199 William While, son of Mrs. E. White, Hook, Makikibi, was promoted sergeant, and awarded tho Distinguished Conduct Modal, during the recent fighting on tho Western front. Sergeant White, D.C.M., left New Zealand as a private with the Seventh Reinforcements.

Mr. H. W. Bishop, New Zealand s senior Stipendiary Magistrate, who has been S.M. in Christchurch • since 1905, will retire from active service on the Bench on August 1. Mr. Bishop who is one of tho best-known personalities in Christchurch, was born at Tichborne, Hampshire, on March 12, 1851, and ho is the son of the late Rev. A. C. Bishop, M.A., rector of Brandean. Mr. Bishop was educated privately, and arrived at Lvttelton in January, 1869. He entered the Native Department.in 1873, and soon afterwards became interpreter to Judge Manning (author of "Old New Zealand"). 11 o was attached to the Native Land Court of the Northern District in 1876, and in the samo year became clerk and interpreter to the Resident Magistrate's Court at Hokianga. He became Resident Magistrate at Mangonui in 1882, and in 1880 was appointed to the North Auckland district. Ho became Magistrate in North Canterbury in 1893, and became Stipendiary Magistrate in Christchurch in 1905. ' Since Mr. Bishop's appointment to the Bench in 1882 ho has served thirty-six years without a holiday and without even the usual Court holidays. His retirement from the Bench will not affect, his work as chairman of tho Canterbury (No. 2) Military Servico Board, which is occupying a large proportion oi his time at present.

Mr. Arthur Heighway, well known in journalistic circles, a son of the Rev. G. Heighway, of •Dunedin, met with a serious accident while out shooting near Auckland lost week. Ho received a charge of shot in one of his legs. Mr. Heighwnv was on the staff of tho "Otago Daily Times" and tho Christchurch "Press." Ho latterly was engaged in mercantile pursuits, being agent at Pukekohe for Messrs.. Wright, Stephenson, and Co.

Sergeant S. A. M'Namara, of St. ITelier's Bay, Auckland, has been awarded (ho D.C.M. for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to fluty in a hand-to-hand combat with a squad of enemy cavalry. His lieutenant having been killed sergeant M'Namara took over command, and checked the enemy's advance till reinforcements arrived. Sergeant MNnmara is 20 years of age, and the youngest of three brothers who left with ho Third Reinforcements. Ho was wounded last November, and after seven weeks rejoined his regiment. His eldest brother Sergeant Ham M'Namara. was killed in action on January 9, 1917. Sapper 1. D M'Namara was twice wounded, and is row invalided home, and his youngest brother, Private Robert, sails with the Forty-first Reinforcements.

Tho death is announced of Mr. Charles Champion Rawlins, formerly Conservative niomher of the House of Representatives for Tuapeka. Mr. Rawlins was born in Liverpool on April 13, 1816. lie death took placo at Riverton on Wed-, nesdav last. Hie late Sir. Rawlins was educated at Allsley Park and Cheltenham, and was an engineer by profession. Ho was for a lime engineer and general inamver of 'tho Island Block Gold Minin» Company. He landed in Lyltcltoii by" tho ship Mermaid in January, 1875, and shortly afterwards joined the gcodotie survey party on the West Coast. In 1893 ho contested the Tnapoka eoat against tho late Mr. Vincent Pykc, three vcais later defeated the Hon. W. J. M Larnach by 21 votes. In 18!)!) ho was defeated by tho bio Mr. J. Bennct. Mr. J. A. Macdonnld hns arrived in Wellington to make arrangements for the forthcoming season of Malini the magician.
