SHEEP DOG TRIALS
Sheep iTojf trials were held at Mr. A. Stuart's property, ou the Bull-'fura-kina Itoad, near Marfan, on .Thursday, and proved a great succeed. The various competing dogs ivero all well trained, and did excellent work. The results were: - ' Short head and yarding—E. S. Johnston's (Hawera) Hemp, 57 points, was first; the award being a silver (up valued at- «EJ2 125., ,65 ss. cash, and iSS ss. donated ,by Mr. H. B. Guisford for maximum points. W. Struthers's (Nukumaru) ,■ , , Speed, with 5i points, was sccond, -..the ' award being a silver cup value ,Sb 55., ' and cash £'i 3s. I l '. lloli'ii's (Motua). Hist was third, Jib 55.; A. A. Cameron's \ (Castlepoint) Yarrow, fourth, .£3 35.; and W. Struthers's (Nukumaru) Bob, fifth, xi .is. Special awards were:—Bo" showing most style: E. C. Netherleigh 6 dog pup ! and E. S. Johnston's' Hemp. , 1 , ; Dog under host command—Fred. Sing's : dog pup, E. S. Johnston's Hemp, and "\V. Struthers's Speed, tied with equal ' points. Best maiden dog at trial, owned and ' worked "by maiden competitor—H. T. Whale (£a bs.), 1; E. S. Johnston's i | Hemp, 2. " ' .A discovery, which' -!is . of. interest, and has. every prospect.of boing of immense ': '■ importance to the agriculturists, of Canterbury, was announced by Mr. C. S. Howard at a meeting of tho.Canterbury: j Education Board last .week. As chairman of tha Agricultural 'Committee Mr.' Howard-',has naturally had muoh to, do"with the wafehing of , the potato-growing competitions, which are'held'annually at the South Canterbury schools, and he stated that experience had- led him to note that where the potatoes v had been planted deeply • there' was ;les3 blight, while in cases ' where plantings had been made to a depth greater than five inches there was seldom any blight at all.
