LAUNDRY WORKERS

NEW AGREEMENT ABETTED AT. A complete settlement lias been arrived at by the Conciliation Council in connection with the industrial dispute filed by the Laundry. Workers' Union. Mr, W. Newton (Commissioner) presided over the sitting of the council. The hours agreed upon are those provided for in the . Factories Act. 'i'lio new scale of wages will be as follow, with the wages paid under the old award in parentheses:—Males: 15 to 37 years, 21s: (205.); 17 to 10, 31s.' (80s.); 19 to 21, 365. (355.); over 21,-525. (oils.); workers on machines, 575. (555.). Females: First Bis months, 15.?.; second six months; 18s., second year, 215.; thereafter, 265. (255.). A new clause was added as follows:— "Provided that any female is over 21 years of age on, entering the trade and without previous experience, she shall be considered as in the second year of Service and shill be .paid accordingly." Female workers employed at any machines are to receive a minimum of 2Ss. Cd. per week, and head washers ss. Gil. per day. In all the above rates 'ttier'-i ivill lx> a war bonus of 10 per cent, as against a war bonus of s'per cent, under the old award. The overtime rale was fixed at time and a quarter for the first two hours,' thereafter time and a hajf. Previously time and a quarter was paid for all overtime. The other provisions of the agreement are similar to those previously in force. The new award will come into operation on August 1, And continuo until December 33, 1920. At the conclusion of the council meeting, Mr. .T. Head, union assessor, expressed appreciation of the impartial manner in which the Commissioner had conducted the proceedings, and of 'the assistance he. had given both parties. Mr. Grenfcll, for the employers, supported Mr. fiend, and mld"d that it. wn* very pleasing that a complete agreement had hecn arrived at.
