THE WOOL PURCHASE
MR. EDWARD NEWMAN'S VIEWS, Mr. Edward Ncwinan, II .P., has telegraphed as follows' to the Hon. D., H. Guthrie expressing the most complete approval of tho wool purchase agreement:— "I consider th.it the Imperial offer to pay the same prices for wool that were paid last year until one year after the war and to divide the profit 011 surplus wool sold in England, a most generous one, and 110 obstacle should be placed in the way of Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph \Vard completing a transaction so favourable to the Dominion. Personally 1 suggest that if the woolgrowers receivc last year's rates for their wool'it would be a square deal if all profits from tJir sale of surplus wool in England should bo devoted to a fund lor the dependants of the brave sailors of tho, Royal Navj and mercantile marine, but for whose vigilant protection during the last fom years this Dominion would probably have teen under a foreign flag instead of in the enjoyment of unprecedented .prosperity." » To this telegram Mr. Guthrie replied at follows: "Tt is extremely encouraging If receive these repeated assurances of satisfaction with the Government's arrangements for tho sale of wool to the Imperial authorities. The palriotic attitude taken up bv New Zealand growers as r whole is certainly deserving of the high est commendation. H indicates that thi; important scction of the producers oi this country are not seeking to extracl the last penny in the transaction. I shal bo glad if you will accept and convey t( the woolgrowers of .Uangitikei district the Government's sense of appreciatior of the assurances contained in youi telegram."
