THE MUFTI ALLOWANCE
FIVE GUINEAS AND ONE UNIFORM
In .response to many times repeated icpresentations of the Returned Soldiers' Association, tho Government has at last decided to increase tho mufti allowance to discharged men, which has hitherto stood at-30s. per mah. Last week representatives of the Returned Soldiers' Association bad a conference with officers of the Defence Department, and as a result of that conference General Robin submitted to tho Ministei a series of recommendations. These were jj> proved by Cabinet yesterday. Tho recommendations as approved cover a lot of detail, interesting only to the Department and to men acquainted with military routine., ■ The effect of the change to bo made is that the allowance Is to bo increased to ,£5 sj. per man. and instead of two uniforms a return >d soldier is to be allowed to retain only one uniform. He is not to be allowed to retain his greatcoat. The Increased allowance is to be payable as from June 1, 1918, and is not to bt retrospective. No cash is to bti paid to any soldier :n respect of the allowance, but he is to be given an order for civilian clothing. The order is to bold Ruod for 'one month from date uf issue, but if for any reason a soldier does not find it convenient to use tho order within the prescribed t'mo lie may have the order renewed on apnlicafion to the officer in charge of War Expenses Branch. All clothing is to be returned at the group office, nearest to the soldier's homo.
