A ROUGH VOYAGE

MARAKOA'S PROLONGED TRIP. Only the fringo of tho gale that is taging on tlio East; Coast touched Wellington yesterday. Tho seas broke \vith tho greatest fury along tho toast line, and tho tompeSt was so iierco that tho Union Company's ferry steamer Mararoa, which is noted for this regularity of hor arrival ut either Jiyttcllon or Wellington, w® considerably delayed on the trip from Lyttelton. Captain J. Spring-Brown, master ot tho Mararoa, told a Dominion representative that the trip was an exceedingly rough one. Lyltelton was left at 6.45 p.m. on Monday, tho usual time, but owing to tho wind, tho rain, and tho mist, progress was very slow. Tim sea was running exceedingly high, and tho *hip was continuously being swept by it. Water made its way to the firemen's quarters, which at the end of 'tho trip were flooded. Tho stewards' storeroom also was washed out, and in somo of the passage-ways on the lower decks pools of water collected. The Mararoa did not mako for shelter, but was kept battling along, and slio borthed at Wellington at 4,55 p.m., about ten hours overdue. Tho passengers, however, amon;* whom were a number of recruits, appeared to bo little the worse for their unpleasant trip. Although her arrival was so late, the Mararoa sailed on the return trip at nine o'clock last night.
