Captain Malcolm P. Astley, of Auckland, has recently been transferred to the New Zealand Hospital at Walton-on-Thamcs, and given charge of 'lie dental section. When the war broke out Cantain Astley was residing in London, and at onco enlisted as a private. Ho served with distinction through the Gallipoli campaign, and after the evacuation was given a commission in the Dental Corps. For nearly twelve months ho served in France, and on his recent return to England received his captaincy.
Tho Camp Commandant at Featherston acknowledges with thanks a gift of furniture from tho Y.M.C.A. for the accommodation of tho next-of-kin of soldiers seriously ill in the Camp Hospital.
The following reference to the lata Captain J. Keir is of special interest to his friends in Wellington:—Captain J. Keir, Inf., marked out the assembly position for his company under a heavy barrage, and led his company with groat ability in the attack. During the advanco the unit on his left lost direction, causing a serious gup in the line, but ho filled this in a most skilful manner and saved a dangerous situation. He moved about under heavy shell fire along tho wholo front of the battalion, organising tho consolidation. Cool daring and good leadership were a magnificent example to his men and did much to ensure the success of the operations.
