Tho Hon. AV. D. S. MacDouald left yesterday for Hawcra, whevo ho will attend Iho annual winter show. Ho expects to return to to-morrow. Tho committee of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce decided yesterday to record its sympathy with Mr. T. 0. Dawson. vice-president, in the loss of his son, Lieutenant T. H. Dawson.

Brigadier-General A. W. Andrew, C.8., of the Indian Army, arrived in Wellington by the Manuka from Sydney yesterday.

The Rev. Father Guinnane, formerly of Mastcrton, who has been chaplain at tho Featherston Camp for somo tirco past, is' retiring from that position to take charge of the Ohakurie parish. The Rev. Father Daly, who recently returned from tho front, will resume his position as chaplain at the Featherston Camp. Captain Holindor and Captain Reece, of the New Zealand Forces, returned to Wellington yesterday after having been on'-active service in Mesopotamia. Captain Reece will leave for the South Island by tho Mauuka to-night. News has been received in Wellington that the Rev. S. J. Handover, formerly curate at St. Peter's, Wellington, has boon elected Fellows' Chaplain at Magdalen College, Oxford. The offico became vacant at the end of 1916 by the death of Canon Clayton, but no election was I hen made owing to tho absence of Mr. Handover and another chaplain on military duty. Mr. Handover, who graduated from St. Edmund Hall in lflll, has been serving as chaplain with tho Oxford Yeomanry. Mr. J. S. Dickson, M.P. for Parnell, who is at preseut in Wellington, intends to return to Auckland to-morrow. Surgeon-General Henderson was a passenger for the south by tho ferry steamer last night.

The death of llr. F. S. Malcolm, a well-known Gisbonio business man, is announced by a Press Association message. Mr. A. Calvert, of tho Inspection of Machinery Department, who is retiring on superannuation, was yesterday presented with a, roll of bank notes by Mr. George Allport, Secretary to the Marine Department, 011 behalf of the deck surveyors and head office staff of the Department. Mr. J. J. Pickett, chief postmaster at Gisborne, is being transferred to Timaru. Ho is being succeeded by Mr. H. D. Grocott. postmaster at Oamaru. Prior to the latter's arrival Mr. P. Curtis, senior inspector for tho North Island, will fulfil the duties. On tho eve of his departure from Gisborne, Mr. Pickett was presented by the staff with a purse of sovereigns. News has been received in Gisborne that Lieutenant E. li. Black, son of Mr. G. J. Black, was one of four New Zealanders who received the Military Cross in Egypt, which was presontcd by General Chaytor. Lieutenant Black left in 1914 with the Legion of Frontiersmen, under Captain Twistleton, and has had nearly four years aclivo service. Ho is now on his way back on duty, and is expected to arrive in August. Mr. H. Moschini, well known in musical circles in Wellington, will fill temporarily the position of conductor of tho Wellington Municipal Tramways Military Band, following on the approaching departure for camp of Mr. G. W. Bowes. Mr. Bowes goes into camp next month. Mr. George Worsfold, one of tho bestknown old-timo mail-room officers, has retired from the Postal servioc. ' Mr. Worsfold, who retired on account of indifferent health, was last in thc_ parcels branch at Wellington, but during tho last thirty-six years had occupied various positions. Prior to finally leaving the parcels office, ho was met* by tho staff, and presented with a Morris chair. Mr. Chisholm (assistant postmaster) made thn presentation, and spoke of the general regret that was felt at Mr. Worsfold's retirement. Tho death is reported from Gisborne of Mr. W. A. O'Meara, a prominent business man thero for many years. Captain Bone, of tho Transport Board, went south by the Maori last night. Captain Lobb, of the Westport Coal Company, was a passenger for the South island by tho Maori yesterday. Mr. C. C. Odlin, of Wellington, will leave to-day by tho Main Trunk for Auckland. Mr. N. H. S. Law, late headmaster of tho Tauranga District High School, has resigned his position in order tp take up appointment as inspector of schools in Wellington. Mr. Law has. been headmaster at Tauranga for tlic last five years, and at a crowded meeting held in the Opera House, presided over by His Worship the Mayor, presentations wcro made to Mr. and Mrs. Law, accompanied by many felicitous references to their sojourn in Tauranga, and best wishes for their future welfare. Word has been received by Mrs. Myers, of Island Bay, that her son, Private Lewis Myers, who left New Zealand with the Medical-Corps attached to the Eighteenth Keinforeements, is returning to tho Dominion. Private Myers went through the Messines Battle, and was rather severely wounded in the right thigh during the Passchcndaele engagement. He lias Been in the Walton-on-Thanie.; and Soulliwark Hospitals for a considerable period. Before enlisting Private Myers was employed in the Harbour Board's accountancy office.
