TOM MOORE FESTIVAL
CHILDfIK.VS COMPETITIONS. The annual competitions in connection with the Tom Afooro a universal , } - were opened in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Saturday. There were good entries in the various classes. Sir. 1. J. Oakes judged the musical items and Air. .Scott the elocutionary numbers. Air. M. B. C. Heade was supervisor, and Air. P. D. Hoskins secretary. The hall was fill- « 1 in tho morning and afternoon by the relatives and friends of the competitors. The finals will ho taken in the Town Hnll to-night, when a very attractive programme will be presented. The results of the contests on Saturday were us follow:— Recitation. Girls.—Rita Stewart (Gujldford Terrace Convent School), 1. Alary Ward, .iOlsio Conrick, and Diana Tabor (Guildiord Terrace Convent .School), and Betty Fincham (St. Francis's School, Island Hay) also yjmpeted. Boys.—Clement Doherty (Jlarist Bro-' thers' School, Newtown), 1. .lames Filzgerald, T. Al'Goldrick, G. Collier, K. Humphrey, R. Thurston, M. O'Hagan, 1). Bush, B. Mosely, If. Al'Donald, A. Blackie, A. Mahoaey, A. Wilson, J. Connor, R. Watson, 11, Barnes, and E. Smith (Marist Brothers' School, Newtown) also competed. Vocal Numbers. Boys' soprano solo, test piece, "The Coiilin"—John AViifers and Thomas George (Jlarist Brothers' School, Thorndon) recalled. Timothy Sauuders (St. Francis' School, Island Bay), Thomas Martin, HuglrKafferty, and Bernard Fisk (Mnrist Brothers' School, Nowtown) also competed.
Boys' alto solo, test piece, "I Saw from tho Beach"—George Collier and Dim Nolan (Marist Brothers' School, Newtown) recalled. Cyril Simpson nnd Cecil "Walters (Marisfc.Brot.hers' School, Thornlion), Eric Murphy, Reginald Dennis, Clarence Bevoridge, and James Fitzgerald aiso competed.
Boys' duet—Walters Brothers and '1 , . George- and C. Simpson (Murist Brothers' School, Thorndon) recalled. V. Minogue and T. Sauuders (St. Francis' School, Island Bay), and D. Nolan and T. Martin (Ifarist Brothers' School, Newtown) also competed. Girl's floprnno solo, test piece, "Silent O'Moyle"—Agnes' Clentwortiv and Eileen Higgins (Convent School. Guildford Terrace) recalled, Nellio M'Mahon and Eileen Ryan (Sacred Heart School, Boulcott Street) also competed. Choir Comest. Bristol Challenge Shield ("The Last Rose of Slimmer")—Marist Brothers' School, Newtown, A choir, and the Sacred Heart School, Boulcott Street, choir recalled. Tho Island Bay Convent choir also competed. Begg Challenge Shield ("When Thro , Life")—Mnrist Brothers' School, Thorndon, and Marist. Brothers' School, Newtown, A recalled. The Island Bay Convent choir and the Sacred Heart School, Boulcott Street, choir also competed. The standard obtained by the competitors throughout was creditably high. II r. Oakcs, in announcing the result of the musical contests, said that he had found difficulty in making his selections for the recalls, and would have liked to have recalled a larger nirmber. He considered that there had been a substantial improvement since the competitions of last year. TO-NIGHT'S CONCERT. A rare musical treat is promised lonight in connection with the Thomas Moore anniversary concert nL the Town Hall. An excellent programme has been arranged, consisting of threo quartet items, two of them mile voice.? «nd the other mixed voices. Messrs. A. C. Melvin, A. .1. Fogprfy, K B. 1,, rtoatie, and !■!. J. Tn addition to theso excellent, items, the finals of the competitions held on Saturday will bo decided, and the competing choirs will combine and sing tho tost piece, "Tho Last Dose of Summer," with grand organ accompaniment "by Mi6s Eilcon Donnohy.
