YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS Tho Council of Education contiuuod ils sittings yesterday, Dr. W, J. Anderson (Director of Education) presiding. The • following memorandum wos J'ecoived from the Minister of Education:— "I shall be glad if you will kindly arrange for tho Council of Education:to consider unit report on the following ■mailers:—(l) Primary syllabus; (2) secondary curricula; (U) local administration of education." .Mr. Hogbcn moved, and Miss Duller seconded: "That the council presently cunsider tho remits contained in tho memorandum from the Hon. Minister." —Carried. Miss Butler gave notico to move: "That in view of the great distances 'traversed by country children in attending secondary schools, it is essential that, school hostels be -established in all the huge coii'trcs as soon a-s possible." Mr. Wolls moved, and Miss Myers seconded: "That this council places on record its confidence in and unswerving loyally to the present system of free, secular, and .compulsory education."— Carried unanimously. Better Pay for Juniors. Mr. Wells moved, and Mr. llogben seconded: "That, whilo appreciating 'the increases in salary or allowance recently granted to pupil-teachers, probationers, and training college students, this council'points out lo the Minister of Education that increases granted at tho same time to cadets in the Public Service accentuate the differences previously existing in favour of the latter, and it declares its emphatic opinion that in order to secure a supply of suitable candidates it is imperative that the salaries offered to beginners in the teaching profession should be at least equal to those offered fo cadets in the various branches of the Public Service."—Carried. Medical Attendance. Mr. Foster moved, and Dr. llryson seconded: "That the General Council of Education urges upon the National Government tho necessity of making provision without delay for better facilities for 'tho medical inspection of school children, and for medical and dental attendance whero necessary."—Carried. Teacher and Military Service. Dr. Anderson moved, and Mr. M'Callum seconded: "That in the opinion of tho General Council of Education the lime has now arrived when appeals with respect 'X military service should bo made for all teachers whoso cases have not already been decided." Ey consent of the council the words "drawn for military service" -were inserted after tho word "teacher.'VCarried. Local Control. . Mr. M'Cnllum presented 'the following report on the system of local control i.i educational administration: "It is recommended that this matter be referred to tho Recess Committee for its consideration, and report to next meeting of tho council."—Referred to Recess Committee accordingly. Other Business. Other resolutions passed by the council were as follow:— "That in the interests of health and physical efficiency no child should be taught in any room where there is less than twelve square feet of Jluor space per child." "That this council strongly urges upon the Government the necessity of bringing the teachers'' superannuation fund into lino with the Public Service Superannuation Fund, by. basing the retiring allowance on the salary lor the three highest years of service." "That teachers of primary and secondary schools who are doing work in technical schools shcnld receive equitable addition to their retiring allowances for payments, made by them to the Superannuation Fund on account of salary received for such work in technical schools." Tho council will probably conclude its work to-day.
