COMPANY'S PREVIOUS LOSSES
ON NEW ZEALAND COAST. The Huddart-Parker Company, which has now been tratliug on the const of New Zealand and in tho intercolonial trade for over a qutu'tur of a century, has now sustained tho loss of three vessels. On July 29, 1897, the Tasmania was totally losf oft Mnhia Peninsula, when covering tho distance between Napier and Gisborne. On that occasion ten lives were lost. A Wellington passenger (Mr. Rothschild) lost a package of valuable jewellery in (he wreck, which was never recovered.
Five years later—on November 9, 1902, the well-known Elingamite struck a rock off the Three Kings Islands, when ui route from Sydney to Auckland, and became a total loss. More than one attempt was mado to salve the cargo mid' valuables, but with little success. Mr. Gow, a Wellington publican, financed one enterprise. His diver actually reached the vessel, and secured some "trophies," but owing la the fierce tid's n. lining iifi' tile group it was found impracticable lu do auy salving worth whib.
