BOWLING
. CLUBS , ANNUAL MEETINGS NEWTOWN CLUB Mr. Ci. Scott (president) ociupied the chair aI: tho annual meeting of tho Noirtoim Bowling Club held in. Iho chub's pavilion Inst evening.
The report and balance-sheet- (a resume of* "which has already appeared) were taken us read. Tlio president stilted Hint tiiel present. membership of tho club was 70. It was decided that all members of the club who were called up for iiutivo sen-ice Iμ retained on the roil df members free of any t-iibscrip-tkw. They had, said- the president, eoiididerabln difficulty in carrying on the club for want of funds. They had been compelled to make a levy, which had been responded to fairly satisfactorily. Iho season had been a successful one. In reply to a question the secretary (Mr. H 11. Uiulonvood) stated that (16 members had paid the levy, and thirty had not so far. paid. Perhaps the reason why some had not paid was because they thought that there was no urgent need for the money. Some had taken tho attitude that the levy was not legal;-and strictlv speaking it was not legal—members were -morally, l>ut 'not legally, bound to pay the levy.. On the motion of Mr. J. bexton it was decided that a proper set of books be opened that will meet with the provisions of the' Companies' Act. The report and 'balance-sheet were adopted. ' . The following officers were elected— President. , , Mr. Q. Noble; vice-president, Mr. H. Hanson; directors. Messrs. J. Brackenridge, ,T. Laughton, C; Pank, hurst, W. Read,, and H. Sexton; hon. treasurer, Mr. .1. W. Salmon; lion, secretary, Mr. ,S. H. Underwood; auditors, Messrs. W. ,T. Bobbins and- G.' Scott; delegate to the centre, Mr. S. H. Underwood'; match committee, Messrs. H. hexton. J. Brackenridge, arid J. Laughton. Mr. J. Hanson moved that it be' an instruction, to the incoming directors and match committee that members who have not paid the levy be excluded from all pennant matches, friendly inter-club., innlclies;. and club matches, during the season. The motion was seconded by Mr. If. G. Bedell. Mr. A. P. Trevor thought that the motion would cause trouble, and they, would lose members by passing it. Mr. J. 'Laughton heartily supported the motion. If there wero members that were not prepared to pay for their sport, the club would lie -better without them. •Mr, T. S. ■ Powell also supported tho motion. .■
Mr. J. Hanson said that later on' a motion was coming before tlie centre, which would decide whether this levy would be considered as a subscription. If that were so, . those members who lnuf sent in their resignations, and which had- not so far been accepted by the directors, would'not be admitted to the membership of any other club. On the motion being put, it was carried, with one dissentient. Mr. Shallcrass's proposition embodying co-operation in the purchasing of soil and grass seed, the purchase of a digester, and the appointment of au' expert green superintendent to generally supervise the upkeep "of all greens, was placed before the -meeting, and explained in detail.by Mr. S.. H. Underwood. He said that the. centre delegates appeared to be of one mind regarding the first three proposals, but Itlieve was not the same unanimity regarding the appointment of an expert green superintendent. He referred to the virtues of digested soil and the successful' demonstration which had been given. • _ , Mr. H. Bauson said that they liail not only teconeider the original cost of the digester, bat what it would take to run afterwarde. They used about twelve yards of epil a. year. If other clubs only wanted , ' that much, it would be found that the digester would be idle' , for eleven out of the twelve months... If they could trade in the soil and so .keep it going all the year round, it became a different matter. . They renlly wanted more detail. .■',■■" Mr. Criderwood thought it would-be a good , idea if they had N more particulars as to cost, based on 60 many clufe' coming into tho scliemp. If that, were known it ;would help them to come to a decision. ». •• .'. Mr. A. Trevor said that if they could buy digested soil at £1 a yard (as stated by Mr. Itimso'n) lie was sure that there was notbin'g in tho proposal, because they would ;not be able to turn it -gut at.anything like that cost. • Mr. T. S. Powell moved that the proposal be shelved until after the war. Mr. -Laughton moved , ns nir amendment; that Mr. Shallcraes's proposals be taken seriatita. The amendment was carried. The first two proposals were rejected. Mr. Liington proposed, that the matter of buying a .digester be referred back to tho centre , . This was agreed to. " The-proposal to appoint a.poner.nl green superintendent was negatived,.- ' . ••' : 'WELLINGTON CLtIS.. Tho annual meeting of the. Wellington Bowling Club was Jiold in < the club's pavilion on Tuesday evening,. Mr. A. Jir/skino .(president) occupied tho chair and there was a largo attendance of members. .' . : lujnoying the adoption of tho; report, the president said that if. the year had noj; been a very busy ono it had been very satisfactory; aud. if the.club had not been very successful iu the inters club games, from a 'social poirft of view ho thought, it had lost nono of its lustre. Borne thirty-five members had toon elected. They had to regret that lour of their members had passed away, three old members of the club, and another (Mr. Parata), who was known amongst bowlers from one tnd' of New . Zealaud to the other. Hβ referred to the fine- patriotic effort'which had been undertaken at the instance of the sports bodies in aid of trench comforts for tho men at the front. In .that connection ho paid ■a. warm tribute to "the ladies to whom the success, as far as the Wellington Club was concerned, was almost, entirely due. ('Applause'.) Onto the corner section the club had purchased last year- a small cottage- was being erected, and tho arrangements made the club would be relieved of all annual expenditure on that score. Ue moved the adoption of the report. .Mr. E. Nortou seconded the motion.
iUr. i. Salek, in reviewing Hie iii:;.'.i.o-'S of the club,.said the year had only boon a fairly satisfactory one, and tliat on the expenditure-side they were Xl2O uioro to the bad than last year, the revenue having decreased by that amount, 'and if tho club's property wits to bo preserved another .£BO would have to be spent. All the 'subscriptions eavo 'one nail been .colluded. In connection with the growth of expenditure, he said thai miyone .witli jiroytsi-ty know that the cast of. upkeep was increasing. At ono time they could get labour for tho green at 7b. or Bs. 'a day, now they had tu pay 12s. a, day. One labourer was asked to roll the green when their .last caretaker had loft, iind demanded extra wages for doing what he said was tho caretaker's work. Ho emphasised tho care with which tho board had gon.o into the matter of tho gram repair, and gave details of tho expenditure. Tho total amount it had cost up till now , was <£2.'iO 0s lOd.. and, with tho drainage of tho lower green, tho total would bo increased probably to ,£l5O. It cost J2700 a year to run the club. The interest account wae very heavy, and thero wero rates, insurance, light, heat, etc., to he paid for. Under no consideration could tho club bo run for under .£"00 it year. Had it not been for the extra cost involved during tlio year they would, instoad of showing a loss of .£127, have teen able to show a real good profit. Ho said that some time ago some of the directors offered to lend the club £1000, but ho thought then that the money would not be needed. Since then, however, he had accepted .£6OO, tit call at 5 per cent., which was a gain in interest as against paying on a bank overdraft. The club had a mortgage of ■£2G50 at b\ per cent., which would have , to ba renewed at the end of the year, I when they would probably lie askod in pay (IS per cent Wove the members prepared to pay it? There were two ways to get out of doing so—oithor to raiso tho raonoy at 5 per cent, (on ca.ll) or issue ; dah'Hi'-urosi s.i 51 .Der cont, ffllO Eiorfc-

This 'following officers wore elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. A. U'ylie; vico-prosident, Mr. R. C. Kinvig; lion, eecroliu'.v. Mr. A. L. Joliiisnn; treasurer, Mr. I.
