A HOSPITAL FARM
MINISTER MAKES SUGGESTION. A suggestion thnt the Wellington Hospital Board could save money liy having a farm of its own was made bv the Minister of Public Health (Hon. G. W. Russell)'at. the conference held yesterday for tho consideration of hospital levies. The Minister said that he had been looking at the board's accounts, and he had remarked the heavy bill for butter and eggs this vear.'
"I see no reason whatever why tho board should not establish a farm of its own somewhere in the Tlutt Vallej'," said the Minister, "and produce a very large proportion of,the eggs, vegetables, poultry, and even milk required. Somo months ago I was nsked by tho chairman of the board to approve of the sale of a property in tho Hult Valley, a property owned by tho board. I do not know exactly what the area is." 'Mr. Baldwin (chairman of tho board): "Ten acres."
Mr. Russell: "I inspected the properly for myself, and said at onrc that I absolutely refused to allow the board lo sell it. I said to tho chairman that thoro was tho phico where the whole of tho vegetables mid much of the other produce required for the board's institutions could be grown. I venture to say from tho experience I havo had of ether hospitals, where they have had small farms or market, gardens, that there is no reason at all why the Wellington Board should not make use of that block: of land. The board could send thero some of tho present inmates of its institutions and give them light occupation in vegetable gardens or poultry yards instead of keeping them in tho institutions. A verv large proportion of the poultry, eggs, and vegetables required for the hospital and tho various homes could bo produced on that ten acres. The chairman of the board mentioned that tho bonrd had made an effort somt time ago to secure a dairy farm, in order that its supply of pure milk might bo assured. But tho contributing authorities had objected, and tho Department had placed difficulties in tho way.
