BOS'N AND BOMB
LIFE RISKED TO HAVE SHIP. During a storm, when heavy seas swept over the little converted American yacht R-emlick, n depth-charge—a fovi.s of bomb used in lighting the U-boats—broke from its attachment cn the stern Tail and was thrown about, the deck by the seas and the rolling of the vessel. John Mackenzie, the chief hos'n's mate, dashed through the water on the deck in an effort to seize it, and was successful in his fourth attempt. He hell tho bomb until it could again be lashed to tho rail. "Had not Mackenzie acted immediately as he did," his commanding oflicer has reported, ''and the charge iemained on deck and been washed lound with the sea, its buoy section would no doubt have become detached and the depth-charge detonated. Mackenzie exposed his life and prevented the probable loss of tho ship and her entire crew."
